  • NEW GUIDELINES ON QUARANTINE DAYS FROM ACHD, PA-DOH, and CDC

    January 5, 2022

The following information is being provided to Steel Center students, families, staff, and the community to provides an update per our JOC Approved Health and Safety Plan:

Allegheny County is experiencing an unprecedented surge in COVID cases, driven by the Omicron variant. Accordingly, the Allegheny County Health Department is adjusting to this and to the updated CDC guidance for isolation and quarantine. Schools may use the updated 5-day isolation and quarantine. “People with COVID-19 should isolate for 5 days and if they are asymptomatic or their symptoms are resolving (without fever for 24 hours), follow that by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others to minimize the risk of infecting people they encounter.” (note: Steel Center's Health and Safety Plan still requires Mask Wearing when indoors here at the school).

To help understand how these changes impact Steel Center students and staff, CLICK HERE to view the updated close contact flowchart. This will help guide you through the updated process. If a student or staff member is a household member of a case, and they cannot isolate from others in their home, quarantine begins after last contact with the ill individual (at the end of their 5-day isolation if they are well) and continues for 5 days of quarantine -- 5+5.

To assist with your decision making, the Allegheny County Health Department has developed an APP which takes just a few minutes to use and answer wheather you should isolate/quarantine and/or for how long. You can access this APP by CLICKING HERE.

Steel Center CTC remains aware of all of the developments and requirements that come from county, state, and federal authorities.  We review and evaluate each update as they are released and confer with our pandemic team. Our first consideration is to follow the recommendation from the authorities and do what is best for the health and safety of our students and staff.

We understand that scientifically-based recommendations can change over time due to changing circumstances or new information.  That is how the Scientific Method works.  We believe that the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, the PA Departments of Health and Education, and the Allegheny County Health Department are all doing their utmost to figure out the best way to address a crisis that changes on a daily basis.  We also appreciate your effort during the pandemic to follow basic infection prevention measures like handwashing, social distancing, and wearing face masks.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.  Stay healthy and be safe.

    Kevin Rice, Executive Director
